A butcher died Friday while trying to slaughter a pig in Hong Kong, the city’s police said.
The 61-year-old butcher, who worked at the Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse on the northern outskirts of the city, close to the border with mainland China, was knocked to the ground by the struggling pig and suffered a wound from a flesh of 40 centimeters long. cleaver, police told DailyExpertNews.
The butcher was about to kill the pig — which he had already shot with an electric stun gun — when it regained consciousness and knocked him over, police said.
A colleague found the man unconscious with the cleaver in his hand and a wound on his left foot, police said. He was taken to hospital and was later pronounced dead.
Police say the cause of death has not yet been determined.
The city’s employment office said it has launched an investigation.
“The Department of Labor is saddened by the death of the person and extends its deepest condolences to his family,” it said in a statement.
“We will complete the investigation as soon as possible to determine the cause of the accident, determine the liability of those responsible and recommend improvement measures. We will act according to the law if there is a violation of occupational safety legislation,” said a spokesman for the department.
The city’s Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, which manages livestock slaughterhouses, expressed its condolences to the man’s family in a statement.
