Southwest’s spectacular implosion was very curious for what has been a chaotic year for the airline industry. Here are 22 ways it’s been a really, really bumpy ride.

Airline passengers, international tourists, and even airline pilots were also more than a little lively this year, with fistfights, high jinks, and covert exhibitionism erupting all over the place. Read here.

Finally, tourism authorities also got caught up in the post-Covid fervor, pouring their efforts into creating destination campaigns that were often bizarre, misleading or, very occasionally, an inspired moment of genius.

China is battling its largest ever Covid-19 outbreak after abruptly dropping its restrictions and partially reopening its borders. The inbound quarantine to the country ends on January 8, meaning families can get back together after nearly three years of separation.

Chinese tourists are also eager to start traveling again, but some countries are hesitant to welcome them. The US, Italy and Japan are among the countries that have reintroduced Covid testing for travelers arriving from China and others may follow suit. Chinese state media called the new rules “discriminatory”.

If you’re looking for a rural getaway, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has just announced its list of the world’s top villages for tourism, which includes idyllic spots in Chile, Ethiopia and South Korea.

There were plenty of new train experiences that excited us in 2022, such as an overnight train running from Austria to the Italian Riviera, the new semi-high-speed line through Laos and a luxurious 2,000-mile trans-African odyssey.

Coming in 2023 is China’s spectacular new $3.1 billion Panda Panoramic Express, connecting Dujiangyan to a panda sanctuary and the scenic Mount Siguniang tourist area in Sichuan province.

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula should open its 948-mile Tren Maya route by the end of the year, which will connect Caribbean resorts like Cancun to inland cities and cultural attractions.

And for the real big traveler there is Orient Express La Dolce Vita. The new 11-car train from the Accor Hotels group, with interiors inspired by Italian decor from the 1960s and 1970s, will visit Italian cities including Rome, Venice, Siena, Matera and Palermo.
