Calcutta:
Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir has once again courted controversy, indicating that he hopes to rebuild Babri Masjid at Beldanga in Murshidabad district. The date chosen – December 6, 1992 – is then the anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid. It has received a sharp response from the opposition party BJP.
“A few days ago, I was part of a jalsa mehfil. This was in a Madrassa in Beldanga,” he said.
“I was invited and I went to the meeting there, and because I cared about their sentiments, I suggested this. Babri Masjid should be set up in Beldanga. Next year on December 6, we will make a cast of the Babri Masjid and with donations from everyone we will build a new Babri Masjid at Beldanga in Murshidabad in West Bengal,” he added.
The MLA, who is known for speaking out of turn and beyond his brief, has also courted controversy in the past.
He was expelled from the party in the past. But he rejoined and won from the Bharatpur Assembly constituency in Murshidabad.
Earlier this year, Humayun Kabir was in the news for a controversial hate speech in which he said he would “throw the BJP cadres into the Bhagirathi river”.
He was censored by the party for his comments. Later, actor-politician and Dada Saheb Phalke award winner Mithun Chakraborty responded to his comments with a controversial statement.
This time, the MLA's comments on Babri Masjid reconstruction have once again sparked controversy.
