Charles Herbster filed suit Friday against GOP state Sen. Julie Slama.
Herbster called the allegations in the article “100% false,” and the lawsuit states, “As a result of Defendant Slama’s false statements about him, Plaintiff has suffered serious damage to his reputation.”
In a statement released Friday by his campaign, Herbster added, “As set forth in my lawsuit, the false accusations and attacks on my character are part of a larger plan designed to try and defeat my candidacy.”
Slama’s attorney Dave Lopez told DailyExpertNews Friday night that the senator had not yet received the lawsuit, but he added in a statement: Charles Herbster would be categorically baseless and frivolous. Senator Slama will vigorously defend against such a lawsuit. Charles Herbster will be subject to the full scope of the civilian discovery if he proceeds with a legal attack against Senator Slama.”
Herbster’s candidacy for governor is endorsed by former President Donald Trump, who will attend a meeting with Herbster in Nebraska on April 29.
At a news conference on Wednesday, Herbster told reporters he has not discussed the allegations with Trump. A Trump spokesperson did not respond to DailyExpertNews when asked to comment on the allegations.
Herbster has stated that since the alleged incident in 2019, Slama has met with him several times, solicited political donations from him, received a $10,000 donation from him, and even invited him to her wedding. Asked for comment on the allegations and Herbster’s response, Slama made a statement to DailyExpertNews.
“I was scared and obligated to meet my attacker, Charles Herbster, because he is my voter, a Republican mega-donor and leading candidate for governor of Nebraska. I was terrified that he would not only sexually abuse me but also would try to ruin my public reputation, and that’s exactly what he’s trying to do now,” Slama said earlier.
