WASHINGTON:
The US Senate confirmed Monday Charles Kushner, father of President Donald Trump's son -in -law Jared Kushner and the recipient of a presidential grace after his conviction for messing around with witnesses and tax evasion, to be an ambassador in France.
The Senate supported Kushner 51 to 45. Senator Cory Booker, who represents Kushner's home New Jersey, was the only Democrat who, together with the Fellow Republicans of Trump, voted for the nomination. Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska was the only Republican against it.
Kushner pleaded in 2005 to 18 federal counts, including tax evasion, revenge against a federal witness and lie against the Federal Election Commission. He served two years in prison, the maximum permitted in a plea.
The prosecutors at the time said Kushner heard that his brother -in -law worked with a federal investigation and hired a prostitute to lure him to a motel room for a meeting with a hidden camera and sent the tape to the wife of the brother -in -law, Kushner's sister.
Trump is met Kushner, whose son was married in 2020 to Trump's daughter Ivanka.
Kushner's confirmation was no surprise. Trump's fellow republicans have a majority of 53-47 in the Senate and have confirmed every Trump candidate voted in the Chamber since the President's second term started on January 20.
During his confirmation hearing, Kushner said that in the past he acknowledged 'serious mistakes' and said that they might make him a better ambassador because he had paid a prize for a bad judgment.
