The video shows rats eating food in the train’s pantry.
The issue of poor food quality on Indian Railways has been a topic of concern for long, with passengers regularly encountering issues such as the presence of unhygienic items in their meals. However, a recent incident has brought these concerns to the forefront as it was not just a decline in food quality, but a rather disturbing event. Rats were discovered in the pantry of a train, walking over it and eating the stored food. Evidence of this shocking incident was captured on video by a passenger and shared on social media.
The video was posted on Instagram by a user named @mangirish_tendulkar, who was traveling with his family on the 11099 LTT MAO Express on October 15. During their journey, they witnessed rats running freely in the train’s supply car. He recorded this disturbing image with his mobile phone and shared it on social media.
In his post, he expressed his displeasure and wrote, “As a railway enthusiast and frequent traveler, this incident has deeply upset me. On October 15, I was on board the Madgaon Express 11099, which was scheduled to depart at 1:45 PM, but experienced a delay till 3:30 PM. Given my passion for railroads, I decided to document the train’s engine coupling and started walking toward the back. It was then that I made this surprising discovery. I observed at least 6-7 rats in the center of the stock car, although I was only able to film four of them.”
Frustrated with the situation, Mr Tendulkar tried to report the issue to the Railway Protection Force (RPF), but the response was discouraging. The RPF personnel reportedly said that hundreds of rats were living under the tracks, and questioned the significance of a few entering the trains. Seeking a more constructive solution, the passenger then approached Assistant Station Master Meena, who in turn contacted the Pantry Manager. However, the pantry manager’s response was just as discouraging, as he noted, “There are indeed numerous rats in the pantry. What can we do about it? The railroads consistently supply us with only substandard carriages.”
“Then I was finally able to file a complaint through the Rail Madad app, and I hope strict action is taken,” Mr Tendulkar wrote.
The matter is being taken seriously and appropriate measures have been taken. The pantry car staff has been sensitized to ensure hygiene and cleanliness in the pantry car.
