West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo (TMC) Mamata Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to do away with the NEET exam. The row erupted after several students earned perfect scores and a paper on the hugely competitive national exam was leaked.
The TMC leader asked Prime Minister Modi to return to the system of conducting exams by states in the wake of the paper leak row.
In the letter to Prime Minister Modi, Mamata Banerjee also called for strong action against those involved in the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG exam.
“I strongly urge you to immediately consider and take steps to restore the previous system of conducting this examination by the state governments and abolish the NEET exam.
“This will help restore normalcy and confidence of the aspiring students in the system,” she said.

Amid a demand for cancellation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for undergraduates (NEET-UG) exam held on May 5, the Union Education Ministry has said the incidents of malpractice were 'localized' or 'isolated' and that it wasn't fair. to jeopardize the careers of many candidates who successfully passed the exam.
Incidents of paper leaks and malpractices also led to the Union Education Ministry canceling UGC-Net just a day after it was implemented.
With a domino effect, CSIR-NET was postponed. Further NEET-PG examination was canceled less than twenty-four hours before it was to be conducted.
The CBI has filed an FIR citing alleged irregularities including criminal conspiracy and cheating under IPC Sections 120-B and 420. Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the UGC-NET-2024 exam on June 18 in two national shifts, aimed at selecting junior research fellows, university lecturers and PhD students.
The exam was postponed after the government said the “integrity of the exam may have been compromised”.
The NEET-UG exam, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is crucial for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.
