NEW DELHI:Ashwini Vaishnaw has been given charge of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, besides the Railways and the Ministries of Electronics and Information Technology which he also headed earlier.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has become the head of the Union government for the third time in a row, has entrusted him with the responsibility of “ensuring that Indian Railways remains an affordable and convenient mode of transport for the general public,” said Vaishnaw. Tuesday.
Taking charge of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) for a second term, Vaishnaw said the government wants India to become a global leader in emerging technologies.
“We want to create a strong foundation in future technology for the country's youth…a foundation that will enable the country to not only stand shoulder to shoulder with the world but also take the lead in emerging technologies such as semiconductors, telecommunications and manufacturing among others,” Vaishnaw said.
Vaishnaw, who heads the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, said the new Modi government on its first day in office has taken decisions for the benefit of the poor and farmers and laid the foundation for youth and women empowerment .
Jitin Prasada, minister of state for electronics and information technology, also took charge and accompanied Vaishnaw at the Electronics Niketan complex in Delhi.
Transformative projects
In his earlier tenure as Railway Minister in the previous Modi government, Vaishnaw initiated and implemented numerous projects to modernize India's railway infrastructure. This included upgrading railway stations, introducing new trains, commissioning new railway lines and widespread electrification.
Vaishnaw, a former bureaucrat, is a member of the Rajya Sabha from Odisha. He holds a master's degree in technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and an MBA degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
