American politics has changed dramatically over the past decade — from the Barack Obama tan suit scandal to the debate over current presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ fashion choices. Beige (or tan) may be synonymous with “boring” in GenZ parlance, but it’s anything but “safe” for White House candidates.
Barack Obama made a striking yet controversial impression in August 2014 when he held a live press conference on the situation of ISIS in Syria. And while terrorism would be considered a major topic, his 'shockingly' light-colored suit was all that many could talk about. A decade later, the color reclaimed its rightful place in political discourse after US Vice President Kamala Harris attended the Democratic National Convention in a flared brown suit.
Netizens deemed it an “expert level choice” for the US Vice President, with many convinced she was subtly trolling Republican pundits. And former POTUS Barack Obama seemed to agree.
“How it started. How it goes. Ten years later, and it still looks good!” he insisted in an Instagram post.
“Remember when a brown suit was the biggest scandal a sitting president had? I miss those days,” was one nostalgic response to the post.
“Integrity and brown suits never go out of style,” wrote another.
“This is the kind of pettiness I strive for!” cheered a third.
Netizens are also still convinced that Harris chose a brown suit to “troll Republicans” at the DNC. Many also predicted “a whole week of brown suit coverage” from right-wing US news outlets following her appearance.
“Kamala is bringing back the brown suit! There might be a tear in Obama's eye. Will the media go crazy? Either way, excellent trolling I must say and she looks amazing doing it,” wrote one X user.
“OMG she’s wearing a brown suit. That’s some deep-cut trolling. Respect,” a second chimed in.
