Russia-Ukraine Crisis: British royals usually don’t comment on important political matters.
London:
Britain’s Prince William and his wife Kate said on Saturday they stood alongside the Ukrainian people as they “fight bravely” against the invasion by Russia, in a rare public commentary for the British royal family on political issues.
“In October 2020, we had the privilege of meeting President (Volodymyr) Zelenskiy and the First Lady to learn about their hopes and optimism for Ukraine’s future,” Queen Elizabeth’s grandson William and Kate said on Twitter.

“Today we stand alongside the President and the entire Ukrainian people as they fight valiantly for that future.”
The British Royal Family does not usually comment on important political matters and adheres to a constitutional standard that they must remain neutral.
But William’s younger brother Harry and his wife Meghan, who have resigned from their royal duties to move to Los Angeles, said on their website on Thursday that they also stood behind the Ukrainian people “against this violation of international and humanitarian law”.
During a trip to Canada in 2014, William’s father and heir apparent Prince Charles sparked a diplomatic spat when his private comments that Russian President Vladimir Putin “did much the same as Hitler” became public.
Charles made the comments after Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean province, sparking criticism from Russia’s Foreign Ministry, who said the comments were “unacceptable, outrageous” and did not portray the future British monarch. .
