The government has reached out to social media platforms including Meta and X on the matter.
The government has also ordered social media platforms to use AI-driven solutions to remove ads placed through banned apps from their platforms.
Tension between China and India continues to grow. The central government plans to tighten the noose on Chinese gaming and gambling apps once more. According to a Zee Business report, this consideration stemmed from the increased activity of the banned entities operating under pseudonyms. The Indian government has already blocked a number of Chinese apps, including Shein, TikTok, and PUBG, and added more to the list over time due to security concerns.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has taken note of the matter and said in a letter to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology that a large number of pirated apps have resumed operations with similar or changed names or language changes. CCPA is a government body that aims to protect, promote and enforce the rights of consumers in the country.
According to the media portal, the government has also contacted social media platforms, including Meta and X, formerly called Twitter, about the matter and questioned the hosting of the banned apps on their platforms. The report suggests that the Center has also instructed them to use AI-driven solutions to remove such ads placed through banned apps from their platform.
The move by the CCPA came after the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting advised media houses not to post direct or indirect advertisements about gambling and sports betting ahead of the Asia Cricket Cup tournament.
Previously, the government advised the media houses, including advertising intermediaries and social media platforms, not to display advertisements and promotional content about betting or gambling in any form, and also warned all stakeholders to take appropriate action in case of non-compliance of it.
The ministry also mentioned that black money is likely involved in gambling and gambling advertisements, which would cause a spike around major sporting events.
Asia Cup starts on August 30 and ends on September 17. The ICC World Cup, scheduled for October-November, is expected to attract the highest bets from India.
