Contact lenses are becoming a trend in India. They are used as a replacement for glasses. In addition, they are also frequently used as part of fashion. Many beauty salons do that.
According to a report by Research and Markets, the global lenses market is expected to grow at a significant pace between 2021 and 2025. This potential expansion shows how contact lenses and cosmetic contact lenses are becoming more and more preferred.
According to Dr Radhika Tandon, Professor of Ophthalmology, failure to observe safety and hygiene when wearing contact lenses can lead to several problems. If their solution is contaminated and the lens becomes infected, they can damage the cornea.
These unsanitary lenses can also become the cause of cataracts, defined as the clouding of the normally clear lens in the eye. Clouded vision caused by cataracts makes it more difficult to cycle or drive a car, etc. Most cataracts develop at a slow rate and do not initially interfere with vision. They begin to interfere with vision after a short period of time.
According to Dr. Radhika, there are some common mistakes people often make when buying and using contact lenses. In many cases of cataracts, people have been observed to sleep with contact lenses. According to the doctor, wearing contact lenses for more than 24 hours makes your eyes susceptible to infections.
The doctor explains that when a person sleeps with contact lenses, their eyes suffer from hypoxia, a medical condition in which tissues in the body are deprived of oxygen.
Due to this deficiency, as described by the doctor, the epithelial tissues of the cornea become weak and cause a defect in the eyes.
Dr. Radhika says that not taking proper care of the lens can leave the eyes vulnerable to problems such as keratitis, corneal infections and corneal ulcers. The damage to the pupil of the eye can also lead to blindness. She also says that lenses should only be worn for a total of 8-10 hours.
