The Indian football team’s centre-back, Sandesh Jhingan, apologized on Monday for making a sexist remark after his ISL team ATK Mohun Bagan’s 2-2 draw against Kerala Blasters. A video uploaded to ATK Mohun Bagan’s Instagram page, which has since been deleted, captured the 28-year-old defender saying, “Aurato ke saath match khel aaya hoon, aurato ke saath” (I played a match with women, with women) as he returned to Vasco’s dressing room in Goa on Saturday.
His comment caused a stir on social media, with many users attacking the player heavily and forcing him to apologize.
“I know a lot has happened in the last 48 years and it’s due to an error of judgment on my part. I’ve had time to think, something I should have done, instead to react. Jhingan said in a video he posted on Twitter.
“To put it simply, what I said in the heat of the moment is that it’s wrong, and I’m really sorry and I know I’ve let a lot of people down, including myself and my family.
“I can’t erase what I’ve already done, but I will definitely learn from the situation here, try to be a better person and a better professional and try to be a good example.” He said a result of this unsavory incident “was that there is a lot of hatred directed at my family, especially my wife”.
“I know people are mad at me, but to threaten my family and racially abuse I think it is not obligatory and undesirable. So I request all of you not to do it.
“Finally, again, I’m really sorry, but I’ll try to learn from this and become a better person,” Jhingan added.
Jhingan also apologized via a series of tweets on Sunday.
“If my comments offended anyone, I apologize. It was never meant to hurt anyone,” he said in one tweet.

“Those who know me personally will tell you that I have always been a big supporter of the Indian women’s team and women in general. Remember, I have a mother, my sisters and my wife, and I have always been respectful to Ladies .” He had said he made the comment during a post-game argument he had with his teammates.
“What I said was the result of the disappointment that I didn’t win the game. I told my team-mate not to apologize, so anyone who takes my comment differently is only doing it to tarnish my name.” PTI AH PDS AH PDS PDS
