If the Golden Globes are not televised, do they still matter?
For the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the troubled organization behind the film and television awards, the answer is yes. It plans to release a full list of nominations Monday for the 2022 ceremony, even though NBC canceled the broadcast. It is not clear what form the ceremony, scheduled for January 9, will take.
Earlier this year, the group — then made up of 86 foreign journalists, none of whom were black — was accused of financial, ethical and diversity errors in investigative reports from The Los Angeles Times, DailyExpertNews and others. The HFPA promised to reform itself. But the reforms themselves ran into problems as stars, publicists, filmmakers and others suggested they didn’t go far enough. As a result, NBC declined to air the awards next year, saying the HFPA should take more time to make changes, such as expanding membership by 50 percent. (The network also placed a question mark next to the 2023 show.)
The HFPA says it is making progress, announcing in a press release last week that it had “admitted their largest and most diverse class of 21 new members to date.” And now it wants to focus on the awards, which in recent years have been considered key markers in the run-up to the Oscars.
Whether it can convince Hollywood to join is not clear. But for now, the group is moving forward with nominations and livestreaming them here with Snoop Dogg making the announcement. We are updating the full list.
