Top US diplomat Antony Blinken called President Vladimir Putin’s “provocative” nuclear rhetoric “the height of irresponsibility” on Wednesday, days after the Russian leader put his strategic forces on the alert following the invasion of Ukraine.
“It’s dangerous. It increases the risk of miscalculation. It must be avoided,” Blinken told a news conference in Washington.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, meanwhile, said the United States had postponed a planned test launch of a ballistic missile so as not to build tensions.
“In an effort to demonstrate that we do not intend to participate in any actions that could be misunderstood or misconstrued, the Secretary of Defense has ordered that the launch of our Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile test intended for this week is scheduled to be postponed,” Kirby said.
“We have not taken this decision lightly, but instead to demonstrate that we are a responsible nuclear power,” he said.
