COVID-19 made it difficult not only for people but also for institutions to breathe. Whether retail, professional or educational, all institutions were locked down during the prime of the pandemic.
For over a year, children and young people had to learn to sit in front of a screen at home. Although it is an efficient and not to mention safe way of learning, the ‘study from home’ culture is lacking in many respects. While online education is highly accessible, it cannot and cannot replicate the experience that physical institutions can provide.
Since the settings don’t seem to open anytime soon as this malicious virus introduces new variants, here are a few tips that can make home learning efficient.
Choose a designated area to study
Having a designated zone for certain activities can certainly help you get into the zone to perform those activities efficiently. Home has multiple distractions, including comfort, that can lead you to not diligently grasp knowledge. Therefore, it is important to allocate a place solely for studying. Adequate lighting, comfortable chairs and a good internet connection are some of the things that are a must in your ‘study room’.
Use images instead of text
Human senses are designed in such a way that the mind perceives images better than texts. Moreover, at a time when online education has become a dominant paradigm, learning and clarifying concepts by watching videos instead of reading notes will prove to be efficient in every way.
Create routines to institutionalize your home
Institutions represent rigidity, since separate routine is one of the elements that make a building a school or a university. Since going to one seems far-fetched right now, try establishing a routine at home to bring some order to your studies. But just creating the routine won’t work. It is imperative that you stick to it to get the best out of it.
Experiment with learning
Everyone has their own style of perceiving things and taking in the knowledge they have been given. Trying out different learning methods until you find the right one that fits your mind is the perfect way to fine-tune your learning. It’s hard to encourage these experimental methods in a school or university, but it’s different at home. You have more control and therefore you have plenty of room to experiment with your learning methods until you find the right recipe.
Practice and revise
After you’ve finished your studies, and once your teacher tells you to log out, it’s only normal, and even healthy, to take some time to cool your head. But before the day is over, it’s crucial that you let your brain marinate with all the knowledge you’ve been given that day, and this is where revision plays its part. After spending enough time to relax, your day will have some time left to review. Use that time to review your day’s learning process.
