Meeting new people can be an arduous task if you have limited social interactions. You may feel anxious, worry about every step, and think too much before you speak. If you already have an anxiety disorder, going on a date with a new person can fuel it.
However, you can address your that entrance by keeping yourself calm and composed. If you’re still worried you might be doing something wrong, follow these simple tips.
- Talk on the phone before the meeting
If you’ve just talked to the partner via text, talk on the phone first before meeting them. This allows you to become familiar with their voice, accent, way of speaking, and build a sense of familiarity. Keep it simple but clear. Feeling good and comfortable on the phone would help reduce your nervousness during the face-to-face meeting. - Participate in a self-talk
We are our best motivators. If you’re feeling nervous and anxious, take a deep breath and talk to yourself about the things that might be bothering you. Tell yourself you are excited and relax. It will bring some strength and positivity in you. - Choose your comfort zone
When we have familiar things with our date, we tend to feel calmer and relaxed. So, if you go on your first date with that person, choose things that you are familiar with. Wear an outfit that makes you feel confident, choose the restaurant you frequent, order a dish you like, and so on. When you have familiar things around you, you feel less anxious. - Stay yourself
It may sound a bit cliche, but this is the best advice you can follow at any time in your life. When you meet someone new, you don’t have to pretend you’re perfect or someone you’re not. Just be true to who you are. Speak honestly and let the conversation flow. If you think before you speak, your brain makes you anxious, but a free flow of communication helps you relax. - Make eye contact
It may feel weird at first, but if you talk while looking at them, you’ll eventually feel comfortable and relaxed. Instead of looking to the right or left or at your hands, look at the person sitting in front of you. It gives you unconscious self-confidence.
