International Migrants Day 2021: The United States has declared December 18 as International Migrants Day. The day recognizes the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of migrants around the world. People often voluntarily move out of their country or are forced to leave their home country.
INTERNATIONAL MIGRANT DAY 2021: HISTORY AND MEANING
They are voluntary or forced movements caused by increased magnitude and frequency of disasters, economic challenges and extreme poverty or conflict. This year, the world saw an exodus from Afghanistan when the Taliban took control of the country in August.
According to the United Nations, about 281 million people were international migrants last year, representing 3.6 percent of the world’s population.
Several events will influence the characteristics and extent of migration in the future and determine the strategies and policies that countries should develop to exploit the potential of migration while protecting the basic human rights of migrants.
Millions of migrants have been assisted by the UN-affiliated International Organization for Migration (IOM) since its founding 70 years ago. The IOM had assisted the large number of Europeans displaced by World War II. Today, the organization promotes the humane and orderly management of migration for the benefit of all, including the communities of origin, transit and destination.
INTERNATIONAL MIGRANT DAY 2021: THEME
For this year, the United Nations has announced the theme of International Migrants Day as ‘Harnessing the potential of human mobility’. The UN said in its statement that migrants contribute with their “knowledge, networks and skills to build stronger, more resilient communities.”
The UN highlighted the benefits of nurturing migrant communities in a country and cited decisions with impact that address the challenges and opportunities presented by global mobility and people on the move can affect the global social and economic landscape.
The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), the first intergovernmental negotiated agreement that covers all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive way, also offers the opportunity to realize human mobility and seize the opportunities it presents .
