Jasprit Bumrah is currently regarded as one of the best bowlers in the world and is also the spearhead of the Indian cricket team in all formats. The speedster originally received national attention for his appearances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Mumbai Indians (MI). Always representing MI, Bumrah made his IPL debut in 2013 and has taken 130 wickets in 106 matches in the competition so far. The 28-year-old is also tenth in the rankings for the highest wicket-takers in IPL. Speaking on Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel, Bumrah opened up about his first call-up to the MI camp and also revealed that he threw Ricky Ponting “two or three times” during training.
Ponting also captained the MI side when Bumrah was called up to the squad. Rohit Sharma replaced Ponting as MI skipper in 2013.
“Actually, I had gone to the Mumbai Indians camp and I had no intention of playing the first match because me and Axar Patel got to the camp late. We played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. We were late to the camp called,” he said.
“The team was already practicing in Bangalore and we only practiced with the team for two days. There the practice wickets were very green and in 2013 the white ball swung. So I was bowling with the new ball. I was bowling to Ricky Ponting and I bowled those big inswingers. I harassed everyone and I got him (Ponting) out two or three times, so they had a discussion about me that ‘this guy has something different and let’s play him'”, added he’s still up to it.
Due to his success in IPL, Bumrah made his debut in India on January 23, 2016 in an ODI match. He also made his T20I debut on January 26 of the same year. Meanwhile, the bowler played his first test match on January 6, 2018.
