Shreyas Iyer was named Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain on Wednesday ahead of the IPL 2022 season. KKR bought Shreyas for Rs 12.25 crore in the recently held IPL mega auction in Bengaluru. Shreyas has captained the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise in the past, leading the team to the first IPL final of the 2020 season. An injury forced him out of the early stages of the 2021 season, which saw Rishabh Pant as captain. from DC came in. Shreyas returned for the UAE stage of the season, but DC decided to keep Pant as captain. Shreyas was subsequently not retained by the franchise, leading to his being singled out in the auction by KKR. Shreyas takes over from Eoin Morgan, under whose captaincy KKR had reached the 2021 IPL final.

This will be a fresh start for the two-time IPL champion and head coach Brendon McCullum said he looks forward to working closely with Shreyas.
