Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will return to competitive tennis next week after two and a half years of injury at the ATP Argentina Open in Buenos Aires. The 33-year-old has not played since breaking his kneecap at the Queen’s Club Championships in London in June 2019.
The former number three in the world underwent four operations on his knee before that injury and dropped to 757 in the world rankings.
Both the Argentina Open and the Rio Open, which will take place a week later, announced that Del Potro had been awarded wild cards to participate in the clay-court events.
The injury-prone Argentine also broke his knee during the Shanghai Masters in October 2018, sustaining multiple wrist injuries, which also required four surgeries.
Del Potro, the US Open champion at age 20 in 2009, won the last of his 22 tour titles at the 2018 Indian Wells Masters.
He last played the Argentina Open as a 17-year-old in 2006, losing in the first round to former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero.
