Our heart is one of the most vital organs of our body responsible for pumping blood to different parts and transporting essential nutrients to them. It acts as an engine for our body that functions for 24 hours until we die.
Our heart has a special ability that allows it to adjust its pace according to our body’s oxygen needs. As we exert ourselves physically, our heart begins to beat more to supply more oxygen to the organs. On the other hand, the heart pumps less oxygen when we rest.
But what if your heart rate is more even when you’re at rest or if it becomes irregular? Experts suggest that the pattern of our heartbeat gives us several clues about the health of our heart.
The number of times our heart beats per minute when we are at rest is known as the resting heart rate. Doctors claim that our RHR (resting heart rate) can give us insight into the health of our heart.
A normal RHR is considered to be between 60 and 100 beats per minute. People with an RHR of less than 60 indicate that they are physically active and that their hearts are functioning well. While an RHR over 100 indicates that the person is either sick, stressed, or consuming excessive amounts of caffeine. However, an RHR that is too low, such as below 50, can also be a cause for concern. According to doctors, if the person has an RHR of less than 50 along with symptoms such as light-headedness, it could be signs of problems with the electrical pathway in the heart. The person is advised to consult a doctor in this case.
Studies have also shown that an RHR over 100 can be a sign of an infection or other heart-related problems such as arrhythmias. Experts have also linked an elevated RHR in men with a greater risk of premature death.
Meanwhile, our maximum heart rate, or the rate at which our heart beats when it’s at its peak, tells us about our aerobic capacity. A higher maximum heart rate means better aerobic capacity and thus better performance in physical activities. Experts also claim that high aerobic capacity is linked to a lower risk of heart-related diseases such as heart attack.
