It goes without saying that boxer Lovlina Borgohain made history after her Olympic medal-winning performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Borgohain, who is just 24 years old, is currently training for a tough sporting season that is soon to come.
The boxer, who is represented by Adidas, says that training has been a breeze for her since her win. For those wondering how it ends, the Olympic medalist revealed in an interview how physical and mental wellbeing plays a huge role in achieving a competition-winning performance.
Here’s the champion explaining her fitness routine in her own words:
An athlete’s mindset
- The training differed before and after the Olympics. The initial stage is mastering the mental state.
- There was a certain obsession with the tournament. It took over me so much that I got the feeling that even if I leave my training center for something, I will lose the training.
- But these turned out to be small things for me because I went through so much in the beginning. After that with Covid-19 there was a break. Add to that the numerous injuries we sustained. These things make you mentally stronger.
- It has taught us discipline. Once you are able to control your mind, everything will follow.
- People think that discipline is only limited to eating habits. That is not true.

The training manual
- To clear my head, I initially started training alone. I’ve set up my own workout routines so I can get used to the workout for the first few days. It is very important to have a free flowing energy. You shouldn’t feel trapped in a gym.
- Now we have Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and World Championships ahead. Before the Olympics, there was a little less stress while I was training. I don’t know why, but I feel freer and more confident now.
- I now train twice a day. The timing differs, sometimes I start at 7am, other times at 9am. But I train for two hours in the morning and in the evening.
- It’s a mix of strength and cardio.
- And then there’s the diet. Because there are weight categories in boxing, you can’t eat everything you want. You have to be aware of what you eat.

Sweat like a champion
- The next most important thing for an athlete like me is protein intake. I usually consume protein after training for recovery.
- I always carry a bottle of electric powder with me. I think it’s very important to have that when you train intensively. You sweat a lot while you exercise so it’s important to conserve energy.
- For us athletes, blood tests are important because it tells us whether there is a shortage of our body proteins, vitamins, iron, etc. This allows us to know what we are missing.
- I trained at home with gas cylinder and water bottles.
