The company said it would not display state-sponsored RT and Sputnik content.
Washington:
Microsoft Corp said Monday it would remove the mobile apps of Russian state media outlet RT from the Windows App Store and ban ads on Russian state-sponsored media as global tech companies react to Moscow’s invasion of Moscow.
The company said it would not display state-sponsored RT and Sputnik content, lower their search results on Bing, and not place ads from its ad network on those sites.
Western tech companies, including Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google, have imposed restrictions on state-controlled Russian media in Ukraine and around the world.
Google has banned downloading RT’s mobile app on Ukrainian territory after it banned Russian state media outlet RT and other channels from receiving money for ads on their websites, apps and YouTube videos.
Facebook is banning Russian state media from posting ads or monetizing its platform anywhere in the world.
“(We) will make ongoing adjustments to strengthen our detection and disruption mechanisms to prevent the spread of disinformation and instead promote independent and trusted content,” Microsoft said in a blog post.
A growing list of companies also wants to leave Russia as sanctions from western countries become stricter.
