As the election campaign for the Maharashtra state assembly elections is in its final stages, former BJP MP Navneet Rana and her supporters were allegedly attacked by a group of people when she arrived for a public meeting in Amravati district, news agency reports PTI quoted police on Sunday.
Following the gang's attack, police registered a first information report (FIR) against 45 people and arrested three of them in connection with the incident that took place in Khallar village on Saturday evening.
Amravati (Rural) Superintendent of Police Vishal Anand said, as quoted by PTI, “Rana arrived with her supporters around 10 pm to attend a public meeting, when some persons from the crowd allegedly used offensive words and made lewd gestures towards made her.”
According to the details, Rana's supporters clashed with the suspects in the crowd while chairs were thrown at the BJP leader and her entourage. However, no one was injured in the incident.
The official said Rana later reached a nearby police station and filed the complaint.
Anand said, “We have registered an FIR under sections of rioting, attempt to murder and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Five people were named, while 40 were unidentified. Three people have been arrested.”
The Assembly elections in Maharashtra will be held in a single phase on November 20 and the counting of votes will take place on November 24.

Rana has often sparked controversy with her statements, and as a result, she has been criticized by opposition leaders.
Addressing the Lok Sabha election rally in Gujarat, Rana said those who do not want to say 'Jai Shri Ram' can go to Pakistan.
In May, while addressing a rally in Maharashtra's, Jalgaon Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out, claiming that the grand old party is working on “directions for Pakistan”.
She also openly challenged AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi and his brother Akbaruddin Owaisi, saying that if the police were not on duty for “15 seconds”, the brothers would not know where they came from and where they were going.
