West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has said “remember that in Bengal, only TMC can teach a lesson to Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)”, also hailing the opposition INDIA bloc ahead of the planned Lok Sabha elections. in 2024. The statement also comes as the BJP removed West Bengal leader Anupam Hazra from the post of national secretary, citing controversial remarks.
Predicting a victory for the INDIA bloc against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), CM Mamata Banerjee said, “INDIA alliance will be present across the country. In Bengal, TMC will fight and defeat BJP.”
Meanwhile, news agency ANI People familiar with party developments within the Congress reported that the Congress will begin formal seat-sharing talks with allies of the INDIA bloc from the first week of January 2024.
With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections just four months away, seat allocation becomes crucial for the Congress, especially after recent electoral setbacks.
The fourth meeting of the INDIA bloc concluded on December 19 in Delhi with the passing of the resolution on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and suspension of MPs from Parliament.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said a resolution has been passed stating that the suspension of MPs is undemocratic.
The meeting took place amid escalating political tension between the Opposition and the BJP-led Central government, sparked by the demand over Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement on the recent security breach Parliament.
The meeting witnessed the emergence of 28 parties.
Shiv Sena (UBT) not willing to make 'compromise'
The buzz over the opposition INDIA bloc's seat-sharing formula reached a crescendo on Friday after a few partners within the alliance hinted that they would go all alone in next year's Lok Sabha elections or would be unwilling to make a 'compromise' to close in their respective states.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has claimed that their party is the largest in Maharashtra, hinting that there is no compromise on seat distribution.
“This is Maharashtra, and Shiv Sena is the largest party here. Congress is a national party. Uddhav Thackeray is having positive discussions with Congress decision-making leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and KC Venugopal. has always said that Shiv Sena has always fought on 23 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, including Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and that will be firm,” Raut had said.
