Oppo has teased a unique retractable smartphone camera technology on Twitter. The Chinese tech company shared a clip showing a smartphone with a retractable/pop-up rear camera, and hints at how it might work. The camera module is also teased as being durable and water resistant. The news comes a few days before the company’s annual tech event, Oppo Inno Day 2021. This will be a two-day program and Oppo is expected to show off various technological innovations and products.
Along with a short video Posted On Twitter, Oppo says its proprietary retractable camera isn’t as annoying as pop-up cameras on other smartphones. The video also hints at the camera’s operation and features. The camera module hints that the camera will be equipped with a 1/1.56-inch sensor paired with a lens with a focal length of 50mm and an aperture of f/2.4.
The video shows a camera emerging from the module — similar to the one we see in point-and-shoot cameras — then descending into its original position. The camera has also been sprayed with water, indicating that the module (or phone) is water resistant. It is also suggested to be durable and to survive drops. While there is no information on how the camera works, it is believed that it can be used to provide optical zoom capabilities.
Oppo will showcase the technology at the Inno World virtual event in China on December 14. The event kicks off on December 14 at 2:30 a.m. IST. The company is expected to showcase products and innovations at the two-day event. Exact details about what Oppo is revealing is not officially known, but the company is expected to unveil an Oppo foldable smartphone. Chinese tipster WHYLAB recently posted screenshots of the alleged certifications of the Oppo foldable phone from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Weibo.
