All pet parents want to ensure good health and happiness for their pets. From feeding them nutritious food and taking care of hygiene to spending quality time with them, there are many responsibilities that must be diligently performed. Well, being a pet parent is not easy and it comes with its own responsibilities. A pet parent should also be well versed in the crucial things, such as vaccination and exercise, to keep their pets healthy. Vet surgeon at Pune’s Small Animal Clinic, speaking to Hindustan Times, talks about some of the common mistakes pet parents make, which can further affect their dog’s overall well-being.
Skip vet appointment
To start the list, the first and foremost mistake that has been noted is that many pet parents forget or delay making an appointment with the vet. Dogs can develop health problems such as diabetes, thyroid, cancer and heart problems. So be alert and report any abnormal changes you see in your pet’s body or behavior. You should also be on the lookout for skin and hair problems. However, it is advisable to regularly take your dog to the vet, so that you can easily detect any diseases at an early stage.
Vaccination
Your furry friend can suffer from many infectious diseases, leptospirosis, distemper and parvovirus, and rabies, just to name a few. Don’t miss the vaccination at any cost as it will keep him or her healthy.
screening
Have your pet screened for hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia at an early stage of 14-20 weeks. If it gets too late, the recovery process will be slow and painful for the pet.
Oral hygiene
It is vital to take care of the pet’s teeth and gums as their teeth should not be neglected. Brush your dog’s teeth well and take them for regular dental cleanings.
eating pattern
A dog’s nutritional needs are different from humans as they grow 75% by the age of 5 months. It is essential that they are fed a balanced diet. The expert suggests not giving the pet too much calcium, as this can aggravate hip dysplasia.
Exercise routine
If your dog stays active, there’s nothing more impressive than that. Make time from your calendar to take him/her for a walk, play with them at home or in the park. No one wants a lazy pet, and it’s the pet owner’s responsibility to make sure he isn’t.
Let pet socialize
Your pet should feel comfortable around other dogs and your visitors. If your dog is aggressive around people or other dogs, report it to the vet. Behavioral modification helps to address these issues, and keep in mind that it is not some kind of punishment.
As a pet owner, protect your dog and do not leave him unattended. If he/she has a phobia, help him/her overcome it.
