Tokyo:
The Japanese Air Force said on Sunday it had found the body of one of the two crew members of a jet fighter who went missing two weeks ago.
The F-15 fighter jet was on a training mission on January 31 when it disappeared from radar shortly after takeoff from Komatsu Air Base in the central region of Ishikawa, triggering a search for the missing crew.
The Air Force said a body was found Friday by the Navy during searches in the Sea of Japan.
The military said it has confirmed the identity of the body but has not released the name and added that the search for his copilot was continuing.
Exactly why and how their plane crashed has not been made clear, but the Defense Department has not attempted to ground F-15s in the wake of the incident.
Japan has seen occasional accidents with its air force.
In 2019, an F-35A stealth jet crashed into the sea after the pilot suffered spatial disorientation, leading to a struggle to recover the body and sensitive military equipment aboard the plane.
