Jalandhar parliamentary constituency in Punjab is gearing up for an intense battle in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with a former chief minister and three defectors all eyeing the seat reserved by the Scheduled Castes. Historically a Congress stronghold, it was once in the hands of Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral.
Here's everything you need to know:
- The Congress placed its bet on Dalit leader and former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi.
Urging people to vote for him, Channi said during the campaign: “I came to stay here. My ancestors are from here. I assure you that I will stay with you and serve you.”
“Whatever you say, I will do it. You are my family and I will prove this in the coming days if you give me the chance,” Channi says. - Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party has fielded two-time former Akali MLA Pawan Kumar Tinu, who joined the party in April.
Tinu relies on the two-year achievements of the Mann government as he talks about giving 43,000 government jobs, 300 units of free electricity per month and opening of 'Aam Aadmi' clinics that provide free treatment and free medicines. - The BJP, on the other hand, nominated sitting MP Sushil Rinku, who was first announced as its candidate by the AAP. However, Rinku left the AAP and joined the saffron party to contest from the Jalandhar seat. Rinku had quit the Congress last year and joined the AAP.
Rinku is banking on the decade-long achievements of the Modi government at the Centre. Praising the central government at a public meeting, Rinku said the BJP-led dispensation has taken the Indian economy to fifth place in the world and the country will become the third largest economy. - The Sukhbir Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has unseated former Punjab Congress president and former MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee. Kaypee jumped ship from Congress to SAD last month.
With 16.54 lakh voters, Jalandhar constituency has about 37 percent of the scheduled caste population. This Lok Sabha seat consists of nine assembly segments: “Phillaur (SC), Nakodar, Shahkot, Kartarpur (SC), Jalandhar West (SC), Jalandhar Central, Jalandhar North, Jalandhar Cantt and Adampur (SC).
