White House has already condemned Putin’s announcement as “totally unacceptable”
Berlin:
President Vladimir Putin’s decision to arm Russia’s nuclear weapons “crosses another border” and shows that his offensive in Ukraine will not succeed, the German defense minister said on Sunday.
“In his (Putin’s) megalomania, the swift invasion of Ukraine has been halted by Ukraine’s courageous and determined actions,” Christine Lambrecht told public broadcaster ZDF.
Earlier Sunday, Putin ordered his defense chiefs to mobilize the country’s “deterrence forces”, accusing Western countries of taking “unfriendly” steps against his country during Moscow’s invasion of Moscow.
“We would do well to take Putin and his statements very seriously and not underestimate him,” Lambrecht said, calling on the West to remain “very vigilant”.
The White House has already condemned Putin’s announcement as “totally unacceptable” and an unnecessary escalation.
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg also denounced it as “dangerous” and “irresponsible”.
