Rohit Sharma knows that the Indian team has been a bit conservative in their approach to T20 cricket for some time, but he expects the philosophy to change as the youngsters have been told not to worry about strange failures. The cornerstone of Rohit’s captaincy has been player safety and it has paid off with three consecutive wins in the T20I series since he took over after the T20 World Cup. “We understand sometimes that we held back, but it’s important to tell the guys not to worry about your positions in the team. We want to fill in the gaps that we have. We just want to move forward”, Rohit said at the presentation ceremony after India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the third T20I to win the series 3-0.
Rohit understands that choosing an XI based on so much good performance is a whole different challenge.
“It’s going to be a big challenge, but it’s nice to have guys in shape instead of out of shape. It’s a factor of everything that comes together. We played together and we played really well. Lots of positives from this series .” He was happy to give nearly all players playing time in the last nine white-ball games — six T20Is and three ODIs.
“That’s something we kept in mind – good to give some of those guys opportunities. If the guys take the opportunity like some of these guys took then you can go from strength to strength.”
Shreyas Iyer, who has scored over 200 runs in the series, called all of his 1950s special, but the second in the big chase as extra special.
“Of course all three of the 1950s were special to me. Yesterday I won the series…so yes the last one (2nd T20I),” Shreyas said.
It only takes one ball for him to get into shape.
“To be honest, you only need one ball to get in shape. I’m really happy with all the opportunities I’ve been given this series.
“To be honest, the wicket was a bit quick today and I played on merit and tried to punish the loose balls. You just have to support your instincts and be positive.” Shreyas, who had surgery last year, is now back to his best, having already made his test debut.
“It was a rollercoaster ride for me due to an injury. To come out of an injury and perform at this level is really heartwarming for me.”
