Satellite images of Russian deployments to Belarus, Crimea and western Russia show a massive build-up of troops as tensions mount over a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Maxar collected recent satellite images from Crimea, Belarus and Western Russia that reveal some significant new military deployments in the region, including the following.
In Crimea, a major new deployment of troops and equipment was seen at Oktyabrskoye airfield on February 10. More than 550 troop tents and hundreds of vehicles have arrived at this abandoned airfield north of Simferopol.
New troops and equipment have also recently arrived near Novoozernoye on the shores of Donuzlav Lake; In the vicinity of Novoozernoye, extensive artillery introductions and training activities were observed, and a new deployment was established near the town of Slavne, on the northwest coast of the Crimean peninsula.

In Belarus, a new deployment of troops, military vehicles and helicopters has been identified at Zhabrovka Airport near Gomel, less than 25 km from the border with Ukraine. In addition, troops and several battlegroups remain deployed in the field near the city of Rechitsa – less than 45 km from the border with Ukraine.
In western Russia, a large deployment of troops and armed forces recently arrived at the Kursk training ground east of the city – about 110 km east of the border with Ukraine. More and more equipment is coming into the area and preparations are being made to house more troops and equipment.

Attempts to defuse the crisis in Ukraine through a frenzy of telephone diplomacy failed to ease tensions on Saturday, with US President Joe Biden warning Russia faces “quick and serious costs” if its troops invade.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin dismissed Western claims that Moscow was planning such a move as “provocative speculation” that could lead to conflict in the ex-Soviet country, according to a Russian readout of a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, AFP news agency reported.
