Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband Nick Jonas recently announced on social media that they welcomed a baby through a surrogate mother. As medical science advances by leaps and bounds and doctors strive to find solutions to every problem, new techniques have emerged that are proving to be a boon to people around the world. One such notable technology that has been gaining popularity lately is surrogacy.
We’ve heard this medical term a lot over the years and now, thanks to Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, it’s back to being the talk of the town. The couple announced Friday night (Saturday morning in India) that they would welcome their first child via surrogacy.
So, what is surrogacy?
Surrogacy is basically a form of pregnancy where a woman carries and gives birth to a baby for another woman who is unable to do so for whatever reason. Lately, this process has helped many people experience parenthood. Even celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Shilpa Shetty and Shah Rukh Khan have welcomed their babies through surrogacy.
How does it work?
Surrogacy involves fertilizing a woman’s egg with a sperm donor’s sperm through medical procedures to create an embryo. This embryo is then implanted in the womb of the surrogate mother, who carries and eventually gives birth to the baby. This method is sought after by both men and women who want to have a baby through surrogacy.
Types of Surrogacy
In this method, the surrogate mother is artificially inseminated with the father’s sperm. The surrogate mother then carries and delivers the baby, which is then raised by his/her legal parents. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate is considered to be the biological mother of the baby as it was her egg that was fertilized. In some cases, parents also opt for a donor sperm that is used to fertilize the egg.
This technique involves collecting the eggs from the mother and fertilizing them with the sperm from the father before the embryo is placed in the surrogate mother’s womb. In this method, the surrogate has no biological link to the baby, as the egg and sperm both came from the legal parents.
Welcoming a baby through surrogacy involves following a legal process as directed by the government. The intended parents and surrogate mothers must sign agreements to avoid future problems with the legal rights of the child. Meanwhile, surrogacy can also be emotionally challenging for the surrogate who tends to get attached to the baby. Whereas, just like any other pregnancy, even surrogacy carries some medical risks.
Recently, this method of having a baby has been booming worldwide as more and more parents have started to opt for it. Recently, actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband Nick Jonas shared a post on Instagram announcing that they welcomed a baby through a surrogate mother.
The couple married in 2018.
