The Department of Telecom (DoT) has extended the duration of archiving subscribers’ call and Internet usage records from one year to two years for security reasons. The changes to the licenses were issued on December 21 and extended to other forms of telecom licenses on December 22.
“The licensee shall keep all commercial records/call detail record/exchange detail record/IP detail record with record for the communications exchanged on the network. Such records will be archived for security reasons for at least two years for examination by the licensor…” the said the licensee said. DoT circular.
Telecom companies can destroy the stored data if there is no indication from the DoT after that.
The circular said the change is necessary in “the public interest or in the interest of the security of the state or for the smooth running of the telegraph”.
The change requires telecom companies to maintain internet subscriber records, including login and logout information of all subscribers for services provided such as internet access, email, internet telephony services such as calls from mobile applications or Wi-Fi calls for at least two years.
Previously, the rules mandated the archive call data and internet usage records for a minimum of 1 year.
