The cold season has returned, bringing with it winter-related skin problems. Most people are confused about how to deal with age-old skincare myths that mislead many. One such myth revolves around sunscreen. Most people don’t use sunscreen in winter because they don’t think it’s necessary in the cold, just because the sun doesn’t shine to scorch them. However, there are several reasons why sunscreen helps protect your skin not only in the summer, but all year round, even during the cold seasons. Although UVB rays are strongest in the summer, they can affect us all year round.
Following are the reasons why you should use sunscreen even in winter:
- Contrary to popular belief, the skin can also be exposed to harmful rays indoors. Today, we use gadgets day in and day out, both at work and at home, and the rays we are exposed to can be harmful to the skin. Applying sunscreen regardless of sunlight can minimize that risk.
- Collagen, a protein essential for skin elasticity, is restored and protected by SPF-filled serums and creams, so it can keep you looking fresh, young and youthful, whatever the season.
- The harmful rays that break through clouds, called UVA rays, can damage the skin if you’re not protected. It can increase the risk of skin cancer.
- In winter, the moisture in the air is low and the skin can become dry, making the skin more prone to infections, wrinkles and chapping. Sunscreen helps to balance the moisture level of the skin.
- Excessive melanin production by the skin leads to pigmentation and this happens due to constant sun exposure, pollution and dirt to which we are exposed all year round. Applying sunscreen can prevent skin pigmentation.
