The United States joined the list of countries that refused to play international football matches against Russia on Monday after the invasion of Ukraine. In a statement, the American Football Federation said no American teams of any level would take to the field against Russia until “freedom and peace” had returned to Ukraine.
“The US Soccer Federation stands united with the people of Ukraine and is unequivocal in our condemnation of the horrific and inhumane invasion by Russia,” US Soccer said.

“We will not tarnish our global game, nor dishonor Ukraine, by taking the same field as Russia, regardless of the level of competition or circumstances, until freedom and peace are restored.”
The statement came as FIFA, the world football association, is about to suspend Russia from the World Cup and other international competitions over its invasion of Ukraine.
Football authorities in Sweden, Poland and the Czech Republic have already vowed not to play Russia next month in their part of the European play-off draw.

The English FA also announced on Sunday that it would not play games against Russia “out of solidarity” with Ukraine.
