“Hi. I’m Kat Coiro, and I’m the director of Marry Me. At this point in the story, Kat Valdez, played by Jennifer Lopez, and Charlie Gilbert, played by Owen Wilson, got together and have some had some really good moments, developed an intimacy and a close bond that they both feel good about when Bastian, played by Maluma, approaches Kat about playing at Madison Square Garden, and not just playing any song, but playing a ballad version of ‘Marry Me “, the song they were supposed to play at their original public wedding. Charlie is very supportive of Kat and her career and wants to support her, but at the same time he is terrified at the idea that she and Bastian are doing something that will bring them very close.” “The crowd is going crazy.” “I know.” “Well, I wouldn’t say bananas, but…” [MUSIC PLAYING] “(SING) I had never seen forever. I had never seen forever in the world. But now I look down. I look inside.” “It was really important to me in this scene that it would be the biggest event of the movie, just from a spectacular point of view. We’ve spent all these little quiet, intimate moments with Kat-JLo and Charlie-Owen—and now her big, giant superstar life is coming back into that world.” “(SING) Marry me. Marry me. Say yes. Marry me. Marry me. Say yes.” “And so it was really important to get her up from the floor on stage in front of 20,000 real fans because it was really important to make Charlie feel like he could never be a part of that world. be, as if he doesn’t fit into it in an elementary way.” “(SING) She never — no she never. This forever, ever, ever, ever, ever. And nobody does it better, better, better.” “We were making the film on a budget, and we didn’t have the ability to shoot in a large arena. And as luck would have it, Maluma was doing a concert at Madison Square Garden during the week of our preparation for the film, and so we worked with his team and asked if we could basically piggyback on his concert to bring this sequence together so the way it ended up working was while they were loading, we grabbed our cameras and went the empty Madison Square Garden and filmed Jennifer and Maluma performing the song And when his concert started, at some point in the middle, you know, he put on his Bastian costume, and we got Jennifer up off the stage, and we had our steadicams on stage with her We had all our cameras in the audience So when you watch the movie and you see the audience reacting that’s the actual audience of Maluma reacting to Jennifer’s surprise And d we did that three times. Then they launched a song together that was similar in tempo and choreography, but was an existing song because we obviously couldn’t leak our song that early. And so we filmed them singing this other song, and so we could use a combination of what we filmed before the concert started and what we filmed during the concert.” [VOCALIZING] [APPLAUSE]
