Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said Om Birla's experience as chairman during the previous term would help him lead the country further in his second consecutive term. Birla, the Bharatiya Janata Party (MP) member from Kota, Rajasthan, was elected Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha earlier in the day.
Birla, the NDA candidate, won the elections against K Suresh of INDIA bloc through a voice vote. Suresh, who filed his nomination after the ruling party and the opposition failed to reach an agreement.

“Your sweet smile makes the entire House happy,” PM Modi said while congratulating Birla. It is a matter of honor that you have been elected to this seat for the second time, Prime Minister Modi, with the re-election of Birla.
Om Birla is the only Lok Sabha speaker after Balram Jakhar got two full terms in 1985.
“On behalf of the House, I would like to congratulate you. It is a huge responsibility for you to sit at this post for the second time during the Amrit Kaal. With your experience, we hope that you will guide us over the next 5 years. Becoming Speaker for the second time is a record in itself,” Modi said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi escorted Birla to the President's chair.
The Prime Minister also said that the works that were not accomplished during seventy years of independence were made possible by the House of Representatives under Birla's chairmanship in the previous term.
“There are several milestones in the long journey of democracy. Important bills have been passed under your leadership. A few times this is the case when we have the opportunity to set milestones. I am confident that the country will be proud of the achievements of the 17th Lok. Sabha,” Prime Minister Modi said.
