Sydney, Australia:
A whale struck a boat off the coast of eastern Australia on Saturday morning, killing one man and injuring another.
The two men were on the boat when it was struck and overturned in the waters off La Perouse, 14 kilometers southeast of Sydney, around 6 a.m. local time (2000 GMT), police said.
The first man was pulled unconscious from the water and died on the spot. The second was treated by paramedics and is in a stable condition in hospital.
The collision was “a tragic accident”, acting Water Police Chief Inspector Siobhan Munro said in comments carried by public broadcaster ABC.
She said the whale came close to or possibly onto the small boat running around.
“Right now there are a lot of whales and there are many examples of whales breaching next to boats,” she added.
It comes less than two weeks after a four-metre humpback whale was hit in the head by a boat propeller off the coast of Western Australia.
