Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico:
At least 10 migrants were killed and 25 injured when a truck carrying them clandestinely overturned on a highway in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, local officials said.
The accident occurred near the border with Guatemala, the report said. It was the second fatal accident involving migrants in less than a week.
A prosecutor’s office source who spoke on condition of anonymity told AFP that the victims apparently came from Cuba and that they were all women, including one minor.
The accident occurred on a stretch of highway along the Pacific coast between the towns of Pijijiapan and Tonala, where migrants often travel in their attempt to reach the United States.
The truck, whose body was partly made of wood, was destroyed and the migrants’ clothes, bags and backpacks were strewn around it.
Two migrants were killed on Thursday when a truck overturned in the municipality of Mezcalapa, also in Chiapas state.
Thousands of migrants from several countries have traveled through Mexico in buses, trailers and freight trains in an attempt to reach the United States.
