Wellington:
The US Geological Survey reported a magnitude 6.2 earthquake off the south coast of New Zealand near the largely uninhabited Auckland Islands on Wednesday.
New Zealand monitoring agency GeoNet said the epicenter was 33 kilometers (21 mi) below the Earth’s surface. There was no immediate tsunami warning and no reports of damage on mainland New Zealand.
An official from Invercargill City Council – the nearest major town – said there were no reports of the quake being felt there or any damage to infrastructure.
