A group of Roblox users create the shooting incidents in real life on the game platform that is popular with children, including attacks at Columbine High School and the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
Known as “Active Shooter Studios” or ASD, the group attracted hundreds of fans on Roblox for his detailed recreation of the events, according to a report drawn up by the Center on Extremism of the Anti-Defamation League.
According to the report, the influence of ASD has been extended to other platforms, including a private Discord server that has been used as a central hub for discussion and promotion of content. It is also seen on Tiktok, where users share content or ask for links to games, and Reddit, where users shared copies of ASS's cards. A YouTube video placed on the ASD Discord Server introduces a game based on the Virginia Tech recording of 2007, which contains live images of the attack and has received dozens of responses.
ASD specializes in making very detailed, disturbing recreation of actual tragedies, the ADL said. The group is part of a larger online subculture that is known as TCC, many followers have a fascination for serial killers and mass killers. ASD had also run a Roblox group that contained around 800 members, in which the leaders share announcements and promote their Discord server, according to the report. Roblox said it closed the group last Friday after he was contacted by the ADL.
“The cards made by ASD are not simple game environments-they are disturbing graphic and detailed, designed to imitate the massive shootings on which they are based on disturbing accuracy and gore,” said the ADL report. In the games of Ass, players mutilates other players or characters, actions that are nominally prohibited by the community standards of Roblox.
Games that re-create incidents of massive violence can make young people insensitive to such events and normalize the re-creations as a form of entertainment, according to the ADL.
In one ass group game Seen by Bloomberg, more than 60 players gathered in a re -creation of the events in Columbine. Lego-like Avatars of gamers formed a crowd for the school with pitchforks and repeated the white supremacist expression “You won't replace us”. Players with weapons shot students, while other players dressed when police officers tried to shoot the attackers.
The game has been removed. Later on the same day, however, a new shooting game debuted that the connection to debut ASD, with more than 1,000 visits before it was also removed.
“Roblox is dedicated to safety and courtesy, and our community standards explicitly forbid content or behavior that terrorist or extremist organizations are displayed, supports, glorified or promoted in any way,” said a Roblox spokesperson in a statement to Bloomberg. “We take steps to remove violent material and accounts from our platform that is detected by our AI scans, marked by users or marked by external organizations.”
Discord said that it has a “zero tolerance policy against content that glorifies violence on our platform. We take decisive actions when we detect violations of our policy, including the removal of content, prohibiting users, closing servers and entering into law enforcement.”
The Discord Server to which was referred to in the ADL report was removed by Discord's Counter Extremism Team on April 18, before it was informed by the ADL according to the company. Discord has deleted various accounts with regard to ASD community leaders and has set up reports so that they can follow and prohibit the bills when they return.
A spokesperson for Tiktok said that his community guidelines “prohibit promotion or incentive of violence, including the prizes of a violent act, and we don't allow anyone to promote violent or hateful actors.”
Representatives from Reddit and YouTube did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
Leaders of the ASD community could not be reached for comment.
Roblox Corp., which attracts around 85 million players to his platform every day, has sometimes struggled with police content. The site is especially popular with younger children, although in recent years has started with the crooked to older teenagers and young adults. The company has been called by researchers and law enforcement officials because they have not done enough to protect children against sexual predators and has been dealing with other games inspired by real-life mass shooting for years.
The ADL previously found recreations of the mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019, which were later removed.
Roblox said that “the vast majority” of the community on its platform is not looking for the ASD content and it is not easy to search through the discovery mechanism of our site. “And because of the fast, proactive safety measures we have, it is very unlikely that users will be exposed to such content on our platform,” the spokesperson said. “Fighting content that supports extremist views is an internet -wide challenge, because these individuals are constantly trying to avoid detection.”
Roblox works with organizations, including the technology supported by the United Nations against the Terrorism initiative and the Simon Wiesenthal Center, which gave Roblox a high score on moderating hatred online. According to the spokesperson, the company is constantly evaluating its moderation practices.
Despite Roblox's efforts to remove the cards made by ASD, the group continues to find ways to make the content available, according to the report. For example, it has been switched to hosting games on paid Roblox -Privéservers, who give players control over who is admitted to the spaces and make it more difficult to be detected by Roblox and to have their bills suspended.
