Washington:
Amber Heard testified on Thursday that her ex-husband Johnny Depp sexually assaulted her and threatened to “cut” her face with a broken bottle during a heated argument a month after their wedding in 2015.
The 36-year-old ‘Aquaman’ actress related multiple instances of alleged physical and sexual abuse during her second day on the witness stand in the defamation lawsuit brought against her by the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star.
Depp, 58, filed a lawsuit against Heard over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in December 2018, in which she described herself as a “public figure who represents domestic violence.”
Heard did not name Depp in the op-ed, but he sued her for suggesting he was a domestic abuser and is seeking $50 million in damages.
Texas-born Heard contradicted herself, asking for $100 million, claiming she had endured “rampant physical violence and abuse” because of him.
She told in harrowing detail an incident that happened in March 2015 in Australia, where Depp was filming the fifth episode of the “Pirates” series.
Depp testified earlier in the trial that an “outraged” Heard was the aggressor in the altercation and chopped off the tip of one of his fingers by throwing a vodka bottle at him.
Heard told a very different story on Thursday on the witness stand.
She said she confronted Depp about his drinking and that he dared her to take a bottle from him.
“I get it,” she said. “I threw him on the floor between us.
“That really put him on edge. It was like a light bulb went out.’
She said Depp threw another bottle at her, but “fortunately it missed.” “Also cans, like soda cans, beer or soda cans, and they come at me one after the other.”
“At one point he had a broken bottle against my face, neck, near my jawline and he told me he was going to cut my face,” she said, adding that Depp yelled at her that she had “ruined his life.”
Heard burst into tears, saying that Depp had taken off her nightgown and sexually assaulted her with a bottle.
“Johnny had the bottle in me and shoved it in me over and over,” she said, threatening to kill her repeatedly.
Heard said she managed to escape and when she came out of her bedroom the next morning, she found that Depp had used blood from his finger, food and paint to write “disjointed” messages all over the house – on mirrors, walls, lampshades and other surfaces.
She said she didn’t know how his fingertip was cut off.
– ‘Feel so ashamed’ –
Heard also testified about another incident where Depp allegedly punched and kicked her on a plane after accusing her of having an affair with James Franco, her co-star in “The Adderall Diaries.”
“He was mad at me for taking the job with James Franco,” Heard said.
“He hated, hated James Franco and accused me of secretly dating him in my past ever since we did ‘Pineapple Express’ together.”
“He called me a slut,” Heard said, recounting the incident that happened on a flight in May 2014.
She said Depp, who had been drinking, at one point punched her in the face and kicked her in the back as she moved to another seat.
Members of Depp’s security service and his aides were on the plane at the time, she said.
“Nobody said anything, nobody did anything. It was like hearing a pin drop on that plane,” she said. “And I remember feeling so ashamed.”
Depp, for four days of testimony earlier, denied ever having any physical assault on Heard, claiming that she was the one who was often violent.
Depp’s attorneys have previously put experts on the stand who testified that he lost millions over abuse allegations, including a $22.5 million payday for the sixth installment of the “Pirates” franchise.
Depp filed the defamation complaint in the United States after losing a separate libel case in London in November 2020 that he brought against The Sun for calling him a “wife beater.”
Depp, a three-time Oscar nominee, and Heard met on the set of “The Rum Diary” in 2009 and married in February 2015. Their divorce was finalized two years later.
