Dr. Claypool allegedly provided the woman with misleading information (representative)
A woman has sued a fertility doctor in Washington, alleging he secretly used his sperm for her artificial insemination procedure 34 years ago.
Sharon Hayes, now 67, of Hauser, Idaho, claims that in 1989 she sought fertility treatment from Dr. David R. Claypool, an obstetrician and gynecologist based in Spokane, Washington. This decision was made after she and her then-according to a report in the Associated Press, her husband experienced difficulties conceiving.
In a complaint filed Wednesday in Spokane County Superior Court, Ms. Hayes disclosed her preference for an anonymous donor. Dr. However, Claypool allegedly provided misleading information and assured her that the donor selection would be based on her specific characteristics, such as hair and eye color. He assured that the chosen donors would undergo health and genetic screenings.
According to the lawsuit, Dr. Claypool offered $100 in cash for each of the various treatments, claiming that this money was intended for the university or medical students who supposedly provided the sperm.
It wasn’t until last year that her 33-year-old daughter, Brianna Hayes, who was born from this procedure, discovered the identity of her biological father after submitting her DNA to the genetic testing and ancestry website 23andMe.
Brianna Hayes made another surprising discovery that she had at least sixteen other half-siblings nearby. It remains uncertain whether other women are currently pursuing legal action against Claypool.
In her statement, Brianna Hayes said: “It has definitely been an identity crisis. This has been hidden from me all my life. I felt traumatized for my mother, and the fact that I am a product of his actions is unpleasant.
During a conversation with one of his previous patients, Dr. David R. Claypool noted, “I know people are very happy. But this is the first I’ve heard of anything in forty years.”
