On Sunday night, at least five people were shot dead by a gunman who opened fire on an apartment building in Vaughan, Ontario, authorities said.
Dozens of ambulances and police officers arrived at the scene in Vaughan, a town about 20 miles north of Toronto.
Maniva Armstrong, a spokeswoman for the York Regional Police Department in Ontario, said in a brief interview Sunday night that officers are still trying to determine how many people were killed and injured in the shooting.
The gunman, whose name was not released, was fatally shot by police officers, Ms Armstrong said. Authorities were not looking for other suspects, she added.
Investigators were looking for possible motives, she said. It was not immediately known if the shooter had any connection to the victims, who were not identified.
Ms. Armstrong said there could be more casualties in the building.
“The officers are still evacuating that building,” she said.
This is an evolving story.
