'We Couldn't Stay': One California Family's Life After Evacuation
Shortly after the fires began in Los Angeles, Bethany Martinez and her daughter evacuated their home on the Altadena-Pasadena border after losing power and heat. They wait until they feel it is safe enough to go back.
'They eat here. Now we're staying in an Airbnb. I come back and forth to get food or water and things like that. Really, to come and get hot meals so we can come and eat. A lot of the things that have been helpful are all the donations and items that these people have provided for us. They will also have a wildfire fighting evening. And then this other place called Altadena Girls, they give away some stuff too. “Without school I don't really have much to do. But when I hang out with my mom, my aunts, and my cousins, they fill my schedule. Even though I don't really like having to do math and not being able to play all the time, I really like school and hanging out with my friends. I always knew there would be a fire eventually, but I didn't know it would be like this: destroying houses everywhere and blocking things off. And yes, leaving people without a home or being able to go home to get what they need.” I never thought this would happen to Altadena, our neighborhood. It won't look the same again. It won't be the same again.”
