The White House forbade an Associated Press reporter from covering an event with President Donald Trump and adviser Elon Musk on Tuesday, in what the old newswire said was a punishment for his style guide that the new label “Gulf or America” of the President did not accept.
“It is alarming that the Trump government would punish AP for its independent journalism,” the AP said in a statement. “Limiting our access to the Oval Office based on the content of AP's speech not only impedes the access of the public to independent news, it clearly violates the first amendment.”
The Associated Press is a permanent member of the so-called “Pool” who offers a 24-hour coverage of the president. As newswire, stories are written by AP reporters published in newspapers and on websites in the US and the world.
The Style Guide of the AP is also the basis for many broadcasts and news services, including Bloomberg News. In a guidelines of January 23, the agency said that the “Gulf of Mexico has worn that name for more than 400 years” and that the organization “would refer to it by the original name, while the new name has chosen Trump.”
De Witte Huis Correspondents Association, who represents hundreds of journalists who cover the presidency, has issued a statement issued to call the White House to 'immediately change course'.
“The White House cannot dictate how news organizations report the news, nor should the working journalists punish because it is unhappy with the decisions of their editors,” said WHCA President Eugene Daniels. “The step of the administration to remember a reporter from the Associated Press from an official event that is open to reporting today is unacceptable.”
During the presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly blocked media from his events about their reporting. During his first term, Trump team officials tried to get rid of press passes of reporters, but admitted after a federal court chose the side of the media.
