A British man has admitted to keeping the corpse of a pensioner in a freezer for two years The subway.
The news outlet reported that John Wainwright, 71, died in September 2018, but his body was not discovered until August 22, 2020 after being kept in a freezer. Damion Johnson, 52, pleaded guilty to a charge of obstructing Wainwright’s legal and proper burial on Tuesday.
However, Damion Johnson is also accused of using a deceased retiree’s bank details to go shopping and withdraw money. But he denied three counts of fraud, arguing that the money he used from Mr. Wainwright’s account was technically his.
While Mr Wainwright’s cause of death has not yet been determined, it is believed the crime occurred when the two were living in a flat in the center of Cleveland Tower, Holywell Head, in Birmingham.
According to The independent, “But the 52-year-old denied three counts of fraud by false statements about using Mr Wainwright’s bank card to withdraw money from ATMs, pay for goods and transfer money to his own account between 23 September 2018 and 7 May 2020. .”
Judge Shaun Smith KC told Johnson he would face trial on November 7.
When asked by the judge what Johnson’s defense will be, Raglan Ashton said, mitigating: “He says he did not act unfairly, namely that he claims he was entitled to the money in Mr Wainwright’s account.
“The deal was that money would be jointly deposited into Mr Wainwright’s account, so essentially he’s claiming it was his money in Mr Wainwright’s account, and in short, he was entitled to it.”
Damion Johnson is out on bail.
