Washington:
A dog shot and killed a man in the United States last weekend, police said, after the animal stepped on it and accidentally fired a gun left in the back seat of a pickup truck.
The victim, who was in the front passenger seat of the truck, was punched in the back while he and the pet were hunting on Saturday, police in the central US state of Kansas said.
“A fang of the pickup truck owner stepped on the gun, causing the gun to go off. The fired bullet struck the passenger, who died at the scene of his injuries,” the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office said.
“The investigation is ongoing, but the preliminary investigation indicates it was a hunting-related accident,” the sheriff’s office added in a separate statement.
Officials have not said whether the 30-year-old man who died was the owner of the dog.
Accidental shootings are tragically common in the United States, a country where there are more guns than people. According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 500 people will be killed in gun accidents by 2021.
